Have you always dreamed of owning a trailer, but don’t want to buy a big ol’ pickup truck to tow it? You might be surprised to learn that lightweight trailers are all the rage, and there is a wide variety of gorgeous campers available that can be towed by a crossover, SUV or beefy little car! Many newer RVs are being manufactured with durable and ultra-lightweight materials, and are designed in ways that maximize aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. This opens up a world of possibilities when it comes to truck-free towing through the BC mountains.

Today on the Get-Away RV blog, we’re listing some of the most lightweight RVs on the market, the towing compatibility for some of BC’s most popular vehicles, and how to figure out exactly what your vehicle is capable of towing. It’s time to set out for your next big adventure - no pickup truck required!

How Do I Know What My Vehicle Can Tow?

Figuring out what your vehicle is capable of towing is quite simple. The key figures you need to know is the Max Towing Capacity of your vehicle, and the Dry Weight of the RV you’re interested in. So long as the weight of the RV is less than your vehicle’s towing capacity, you’re probably in good shape! Keep in mind that once you add fluids, food and other cargo to your RV, the weight will increase slightly. Normally this will only add about 120-500 lbs. Let’s take a look at a few examples using some of BC’s more popular CUV and SUV models:

Taken a trip to Open Road Toyota Abbotsford lately? Top-selling SUVs like the Toyota Highlander and Toyota Sequoia are cleared to tow 2,250 lbs and 3,175, respectively. With so many RV units weighing in well under 2,000 lbs (see our list in the paragraph below!), towing with a Highlander, a 4Runner (which has the same towing capacity as the Highlander) or a Sequoia would be a breeze.

If you’re browsing around Abbotsford Hyundai, models like the Santa Fe (towing capacity of 1590 lbs on equipped models) and the Palisade (towing capacity up to 2260 lbs) are great options for towing a lightweight RV.

One thing is for certain: folks from BC love their Jeeps! If you’re looking to pick up a new Jeep Wrangler from Abbotsford Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM, you can equip it to tow up to 3,500 lbs - which is enough for some full-size trailers!
